You merge your documents into one neat PDF, send it off — and the person on the other end opens it to find page 3 lying on its side. It’s a small thing that makes a document look careless. Here’s why it happens and how to fix it so it stays fixed.
Why pages end up sideways
- Scanning landscape documents in a portrait scanner, or placing a page the wrong way on the glass.
- Phone photos where the phone’s orientation sensor guessed wrong — common when shooting straight down at a table.
- Mixed documents — certificates, ID cards and forms often have different orientations, and merging them keeps each page as it was.
- Some software exports landscape pages with a rotation flag that other apps read differently.
Why rotating in your viewer doesn’t fix it
Most PDF viewers (browsers, Adobe Reader, phone apps) have a rotate view button. It turns the page on your screen only. Close the file, send it to someone, or print it — and it’s sideways again.
To fix it properly, the rotation has to be saved into the PDF file itself.
Every PDF page has a built-in “rotate” setting. Changing it and saving the file tells every viewer and printer to display the page the right way up — without changing the content.
Which rotation do you need?
| How the text looks | Rotate |
|---|---|
| Reads from bottom to top | 90° clockwise |
| Reads from top to bottom | 90° counter-clockwise |
| Upside down | 180° |
Step by step
- Open the Rotate PDF tool and choose your PDF.
- Choose the angle — 90° clockwise, 180° or 90° counter-clockwise.
- Enter the pages to rotate, e.g.
3or2, 5-7. Leave it empty to rotate every page. - Click Rotate PDF and download the corrected file.
- Open the new file to confirm, and repeat for any pages that need a different angle.
Example: a 6-page application where page 4 (a landscape certificate) is sideways and page 6 (an ID scan) is upside down. Rotate page 4 by 90° first, then rotate page 6 of the new file by 180°.
Prevent it next time
- Scan with the top of the page towards the scanner’s top edge.
- Use your phone’s document scanner mode (Notes, Files, Google Drive or Google Lens), which detects and straightens pages.
- Check each image’s orientation before converting photos to PDF.
- Preview the merged PDF before sending it.
Rotate privately
Our Rotate PDF tool saves the rotation into your file and runs entirely in your browser — your documents aren’t uploaded. Pick the pages, pick the angle, and download a PDF that opens the right way up for everyone.

Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?
No. Rotation changes an instruction in the file about how each page is displayed; the content itself isn't re-compressed.
Which way should I rotate?
If text reads from bottom to top, rotate 90° clockwise. If it reads from top to bottom, rotate 90° counter-clockwise. If it's upside down, rotate 180°.
Can I rotate different pages by different amounts?
Yes. Run the rotation once for the pages that need 90°, then again on the new file for pages needing 180°.
