The rules
- Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added: VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8.
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.
- A symbol is never repeated more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV, not IIII.
Example: 2026 = MMXXVI (1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1).
