What is a purchase order?

A purchase order (PO) is a document a buyer sends to a supplier to officially order goods or services. It lists what is being bought, quantities, agreed prices, delivery date and payment terms. Once the supplier accepts it, the PO becomes a binding agreement, and the supplier’s later invoice is matched against it.
