  3. Click “Generate” and copy your new password.

What makes a password strong?

Strength comes mainly from length and randomness. Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords, so a random 16-character password is vastly harder to crack than a clever 8-character one. The strength meter shows the password’s entropy in bits: 60+ bits is strong, and 80+ bits is very strong.

Is it safe to use an online generator?

This generator uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Passwords are created on your device and are never sent over the internet or saved.

Password tips

  • Use a different password for every account.
  • Store them in a password manager rather than writing them down.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered.

Frequently asked questions

How long should my password be?

At least 12 characters for everyday accounts and 16 or more for email, banking and password-manager master passwords.

What does “avoid look-alike characters” do?

It removes characters that are easy to confuse, such as 0/O and 1/l/I, which helps when you need to type the password by hand.
