Engagement rate formula
Engagement rate = (Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves) ÷ Posts ÷ Followers × 100
Example: 10 posts with 5,000 total interactions and 20,000 followers gives 5,000 ÷ 10 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2.5% per post.
What is a good engagement rate?
Rough guide for Instagram by follower-based engagement:
| Rate | Rating |
|---|---|
| Below 1% | Low |
| 1% – 3% | Average to good |
| 3% – 6% | High |
| Above 6% | Very high |
Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones, and benchmarks differ by platform and niche. Brands often check engagement rate before choosing influencers, so track yours over time.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use followers or reach?
Follower-based engagement is easy to compare between accounts. Reach-based engagement (interactions ÷ reach) shows how engaging your content is to people who actually saw it. Enter your reach in the followers box to calculate it.
How many posts should I include?
Use your last 10–12 posts for a stable average, and leave out unusual viral posts or giveaways.
