Before you email a contract draft, share a design proof with a client, or upload a copy of your ID card, it’s worth adding a watermark. It takes seconds and makes it immediately clear how the document should — and shouldn’t — be used.
Common watermark types
| Watermark | Use it for |
|---|---|
| DRAFT | Documents still being reviewed, so no one mistakes them for final |
| CONFIDENTIAL | Internal reports, salary data, business plans |
| SAMPLE | Templates, previews and portfolio pieces |
| COPY | Duplicates of original certificates |
| For [purpose] only | ID proofs shared for a specific verification |
Watermark your ID copies
Copies of Aadhaar, PAN, passport and other IDs get shared for SIM cards, rentals, job joining and KYC. Once shared, you have little control over where they end up.
A purpose-specific watermark helps:
For rental agreement with ABC Properties only – 31 Oct 2026
If the copy is misused elsewhere, the watermark makes it obviously out of place, and many verification desks will reject it.
Keep the watermark across the document, but avoid covering your photo or key numbers completely — the receiver still needs to read them.
Getting the look right
Opacity
- 15–30% — visible but doesn’t interfere with reading. Good for most uses.
- 40%+ — very prominent, suitable for SAMPLE or preview copies you don’t want used at all.
Angle
- 45° diagonal is the classic choice — it covers the most area and is harder to crop out.
- 0° (horizontal) looks cleaner for DRAFT banners on business documents.
Size
Large enough to be noticed across the page — 50–80 points for a single word on A4 — but not so large it runs off the page.
Colour
Grey or muted red are the safest choices. Bright colours can make printed pages hard to read.
Step by step
- Open the Watermark PDF tool and choose your PDF.
- Type the watermark text, e.g. CONFIDENTIAL or a purpose-specific line.
- Adjust size, opacity, angle and colour.
- Click Add watermark, download, and check the result.
What watermarks can’t do
- They don’t encrypt the file. Anyone who receives the PDF can still read it.
- They can sometimes be removed with editing software, especially simple text watermarks.
- They don’t stop screenshots or photos of the screen.
For highly sensitive documents, combine watermarks with other measures: share only the pages needed, password-protect the PDF, use secure sharing links that expire, and share with as few people as possible.
Watermark privately
Our Watermark PDF tool runs in your browser, so the document you’re protecting is never uploaded anywhere. It uses the standard PDF font, which supports English letters, numbers and common symbols.

Should I watermark my Aadhaar or PAN copy?
It's a good habit. A watermark like 'For KYC with XYZ Bank only – 31 Oct 2026' makes it harder to reuse the copy for another purpose.
Can watermarks be removed?
Someone with PDF editing software can sometimes remove or cover them. Watermarks discourage casual misuse; they're not strong protection.
Which colour works best?
Grey or a muted red is common. Avoid colours that clash with your content or are hard to see on white paper.
