You need to send one PDF, but you have five: an application form, an ID proof, two certificates and a bank statement. Merging them is easy — but many popular PDF websites do it by uploading your documents to their servers. For files containing your Aadhaar, PAN, salary slips or medical reports, that’s worth thinking about.
Why uploading sensitive PDFs is a risk
When you upload a file to an online converter, you are trusting that company to:
- transfer it securely,
- delete it when they say they will,
- never use, scan or leak it, and
- keep their servers safe from attackers.
Reputable services take this seriously, but every upload is still a copy of your private data sitting on someone else’s computer. For everyday documents that is a small risk — for identity documents and financial records it is better avoided when there is a simple alternative.
How browser-based merging works
Modern browsers are powerful enough to read and write PDF files themselves using JavaScript. A browser-based tool loads its code once, then processes your files on your own device. The PDFs never leave your computer or phone. You can even check this: load the page, turn off your internet connection, and the tool still works.
Our Merge PDF tool works this way.
Step-by-step: merge PDFs privately
- Open the Merge PDF tool in any modern browser — Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, on desktop or mobile.
- Choose your files or drag and drop them onto the box. You can add more at any time.
- Arrange the order with the up and down arrows. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the merged PDF.
- Click “Merge PDF”. The combined file downloads immediately as merged.pdf.
- Open it and check every page is there and in the right order before sending it.
Tip: before you start, rename your files with numbers — 01-form.pdf, 02-aadhaar.pdf, 03-marksheet.pdf. Most file pickers sort by name, so they will be added in the right order automatically.
Common problems and fixes
“This PDF is encrypted”
Password-protected PDFs (often bank statements) can’t be merged until the protection is removed. Open the file with its password in a PDF reader and use Print → Save as PDF to create an unlocked copy — only for documents you own or have permission to change.
Pages are sideways
Scanned pages sometimes come out rotated. Fix them with the Rotate PDF tool first, so the merged document reads correctly for everyone.
The merged file is too large
Government and job portals often limit uploads to 1–5 MB. Large merged files are usually caused by scanned pages saved as high-resolution images. You can:
- Rescan at a lower resolution (150–200 DPI is enough for most documents).
- Compress the images before converting them to PDF.
- Split the PDF into two parts if the portal allows multiple uploads.
Photos instead of PDFs
If some of your documents are JPG photos from your phone, convert them with the JPG to PDF tool first, then merge everything together.
A quick checklist before you send
- ✅ All pages present and in the correct order
- ✅ Every page the right way up
- ✅ File size within the portal’s limit
- ✅ File name that makes sense to the receiver, e.g. Rahul-Sharma-Application.pdf

How can I tell if a PDF tool uploads my files?
Tools that upload usually show an upload progress bar and take longer for large files. A browser-based tool processes instantly and keeps working even if you switch off Wi-Fi after the page has loaded.
Will merging reduce the quality of my PDFs?
No. Merging copies pages as they are. Text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution.
Can I merge PDFs on my phone?
Yes. Open the merge tool in your phone's browser, choose the files from your downloads or file manager, and download the combined PDF.
