FD maturity formula

A = P × (1 + r/n)n·t

  • A – maturity amount
  • P – deposit amount
  • r – annual interest rate as a decimal
  • n – compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly)
  • t – tenure in years

Example: 1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years compounded quarterly matures at about 1,41,478, earning 41,478 in interest.

Things to keep in mind

  • Senior citizens usually get 0.25%–0.50% extra interest.
  • Tax: FD interest is taxable as income, and banks may deduct TDS above a threshold. This calculator shows pre-tax returns.
  • Premature withdrawal usually carries a penalty on the interest rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is FD interest compounded quarterly?

Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly for cumulative deposits. Check your bank’s terms and pick the matching option.

What is the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FD?

A cumulative FD reinvests the interest and pays everything at maturity, which this calculator shows. A non-cumulative FD pays interest out monthly, quarterly or yearly, so it does not compound.
