How to use the Dilution Calculator (C1V1 = C2V2)
- Choose which value you want to find.
- Enter the other three values (use the same units for both concentrations and both volumes).
- Read the answer and how much diluent to add.
The dilution equation
C1 × V1 = C2 × V2
- C1 – concentration of the stock solution
- V1 – volume of stock solution to use
- C2 – desired final concentration
- V2 – desired final volume
Example: to make 500 mL of 10% solution from a 70% stock: V1 = 10 × 500 ÷ 70 ≈ 71.4 mL of stock, topped up with 428.6 mL of diluent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use mg/mL, % or molarity?
Yes, any concentration unit works as long as C1 and C2 use the same unit, and V1 and V2 use the same unit.
