If you’re trying to conceive — or simply want to understand your body better — the fertile window is the most important part of your cycle to know. It’s shorter than many people think, and it doesn’t always fall where calendars suggest.

This article is general health information, not medical advice. Please consult a doctor or gynaecologist for personal guidance.

The basics of the menstrual cycle

A cycle starts on the first day of your period and ends the day before your next period. An average cycle is about 28 days, but anything from roughly 21 to 35 days is common in adults.

The cycle has two main phases:

  1. Follicular phase — from your period until ovulation. An egg matures in one of the ovaries. This phase varies in length.
  2. Luteal phase — from ovulation until the next period. This phase is fairly consistent, usually around 12–14 days.

Because the luteal phase is stable, ovulation is best predicted by counting back about 14 days from the next expected period.

What is the fertile window?

Two facts define it:

  • Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to about 5 days.
  • The egg survives for about 12–24 hours after ovulation.

So the fertile window is roughly the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation — about six days in total. The two or three days before ovulation are often considered the most fertile, because sperm are already waiting when the egg is released.

Example: your last period started on 25 October and your cycles are 28 days.
Next period ≈ 22 November. Ovulation ≈ 14 days earlier → 8 November.
Fertile window ≈ 3 to 9 November.

Signs your body gives near ovulation

  • Cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery and stretchy, like raw egg white.
  • Basal body temperature rises slightly (about 0.2–0.5 °C) after ovulation and stays higher until your period. Tracking it over months shows your pattern.
  • Ovulation pain (mittelschmerz) — a mild ache on one side of the lower abdomen for some people.
  • Increased libido and breast tenderness in some cases.

Ovulation test kits

Ovulation predictor kits (LH tests) detect the luteinising hormone surge that happens 24–36 hours before ovulation. A positive test means ovulation is likely within the next day or so — a good time to try to conceive. They’re widely available at pharmacies.

When predictions are less reliable

  • Irregular cycles, where the length changes a lot month to month
  • PCOS and other hormonal conditions
  • Recent pregnancy, breastfeeding, or stopping hormonal contraception
  • Stress, illness, travel or big weight changes

If your cycles are irregular, track them for a few months and consider ovulation tests or a doctor’s advice rather than relying on calendar dates alone.

Simple tips if you’re trying to conceive

  1. Have intercourse every 1–2 days during the fertile window.
  2. Track your cycles for a few months to learn your real average length.
  3. Look after general health: balanced diet, folic acid (as advised by your doctor), limiting alcohol and not smoking.
  4. Don’t let tracking become stressful — it’s a guide, not a deadline.

Predict your next six cycles

Frequently asked questions

Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?

It's much less likely, but cycles vary and ovulation can come earlier or later than predicted. Calendar methods alone aren't reliable contraception.

How long does ovulation last?

The egg is released in a single event and survives roughly 12–24 hours. Fertility extends earlier because sperm can survive up to five days.

When should I see a doctor?

If you're under 35 and haven't conceived after 12 months of trying (or 6 months if you're 35 or older), or if your cycles are very irregular or absent, consult a gynaecologist.
