For small businesses, creators and freelancers in India, WhatsApp is often where sales actually happen. But asking customers to “save my number and message me” loses people at every step. A click-to-chat link fixes that: one tap, and the chat opens.
What a click-to-chat link looks like
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20to%20order
It has two parts:
- The number — country code plus phone number, digits only.
- The message (optional) — text that appears pre-typed in the chat box, encoded so it works inside a URL (spaces become %20, and so on).
When someone taps the link, WhatsApp opens on their phone (or WhatsApp Web on a computer) with a chat to that number and the message ready to send.
Formatting the number correctly
This is where most links break.
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
| +91 98765 43210 | 919876543210 |
| 09876543210 | 919876543210 |
| 98765-43210 | 919876543210 |
Rules:
- Start with the country code (91 for India, 971 for UAE, 1 for USA/Canada…).
- Remove the plus sign, spaces, dashes and brackets.
- Remove the leading 0 used for national dialling.
Writing a pre-filled message that works
A good pre-filled message saves both sides time and tells you where the customer came from:
- “Hi! I saw your Instagram and want to know the price of the blue kurta.”
- “Hello, I’d like to book a table for 4 people.”
- “Hi, I’m interested in the 2BHK in Baner. Please share details.”
Keep it short and easy to edit. Customers will happily send a message that's already written — but they'll delete a long, salesy one.
Different links for different places (Instagram, website, Google ads) with slightly different messages also tell you which channel brings the most enquiries.
Where to use your link
- Instagram, YouTube and Facebook bios
- Your website — a floating “Chat on WhatsApp” button
- Google Business Profile
- Ads — click-to-WhatsApp campaigns
- Email signatures and invoice footers
Make it a QR code for the offline world
For shop counters, restaurant tables, product packaging, flyers and visiting cards, a QR code of your WhatsApp link works brilliantly — customers scan with their camera and the chat opens immediately. Print it at least 2–3 cm wide and test it with a couple of phones before printing in bulk.
Tips for handling WhatsApp enquiries
- Use WhatsApp Business — it adds a business profile, catalogue, quick replies and away messages.
- Set a greeting message so customers get an instant reply.
- Reply quickly — speed is often the difference between a sale and a lost lead.
- Respect privacy — don’t add enquiry numbers to broadcast lists without permission.

Is the wa.me link official?
Yes. wa.me is WhatsApp's own click-to-chat short link format.
Can I use it with WhatsApp Business?
Yes. Click-to-chat links work with both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business numbers. The Business app can also generate a short link from its settings.
Will people see my number?
Yes. The number is part of the link, and the chat opens with your number. Use a business number if you don't want to share a personal one.
