“What is your age as on 1 August 2026?” Exam forms, job applications, insurance proposals and school admissions all ask some version of this question — and getting it wrong by even one day can make you ineligible. Here’s how exact age is calculated, including the tricky cases most people never think about.

The basic method

Exact age is counted in three steps:

  1. Complete years — how many full birthdays have passed.
  2. Complete months — how many full months since the last birthday.
  3. Remaining days — the days left over after the last full month.

Example: born on 15 August 1998, age on 31 October 2026.
Last birthday: 15 August 2026 → 28 years.
15 August → 15 October 2026 = 2 months.
15 October → 31 October = 16 days.
Exact age: 28 years, 2 months, 16 days.

The “borrowing” method on paper

You might remember this from school — subtracting dates like a column sum:

YearMonthDay
Age-on date20261031
Date of birth19980815
Difference28216

When the day in the bottom row is bigger, you borrow a month from the month column and add the days of the previous month to the day column. When the month is bigger, you borrow 12 months from the year column. This works most of the time, but it can go wrong around month ends — which is where a calculator helps.

The tricky cases

Birthdays on the 29th, 30th or 31st

Not every month has a 31st. So what is one month after 31 January? Most systems, including ours, use the last day of the month when the date doesn’t exist — 28 February (or 29 February in a leap year).

Born 31 January 2025, age on 1 March 2026: one year brings you to 31 January 2026; one month later is 28 February 2026 (February has no 31st); plus 1 day to 1 March. Exact age: 1 year, 1 month, 1 day.

Simple paper methods can produce strange answers here, such as negative days. If you calculate age by hand for an important form, double-check edge cases like this.

Leap-year birthdays (29 February)

People born on 29 February have a “real” birthday only every four years. For counting age in other years, the common convention is to treat 28 February as the birthday. Some legal systems use 1 March instead, so for official documents follow the applicable rules.

Time zones and time of birth

Age calculators work in whole calendar days, using dates only. The time of birth doesn’t affect eligibility for exams or jobs, which use dates.

Age as on a cut-off date

Government exams and jobs usually specify an age limit “as on” a particular date, such as “21 to 32 years as on 01.08.2026”. That means:

  • Your age is calculated on the cut-off date, not the date you fill in the form.
  • Being one day over the upper limit makes you ineligible (unless an age relaxation applies to your category).
  • Notifications often state the eligible birth date range directly, e.g. “born not earlier than 02.08.1994 and not later than 01.08.2005” — compare your date of birth against that range for a quick check.

Always follow the exact wording of the official notification, including any relaxation for reserved categories, ex-servicemen or persons with disabilities.

Other useful numbers

  • Total days lived — the exact number of calendar days between your birth date and today.
  • Total weeks and months — handy for babies’ ages and milestones.
  • Days to next birthday — for planning celebrations, or just curiosity.

Frequently asked questions

How old is someone born on 29 February in a normal year?

In non-leap years their birthday is commonly treated as 28 February for counting age. Legal rules can differ by country, so check official requirements if it matters for a document.

Why does my age in months differ between calculators?

Calculators differ in how they handle month ends. For example, from 31 January to 28 February can be counted as one full month (because February has no 31st) or as 28 days. Our calculator treats it as one month.

Is age counted from the birth date or the next day?

You complete a year of age on your birthday. On your 18th birthday you are exactly 18 years, 0 months and 0 days old.
